Growth Manager

Universe opens up the possibilities of the internet to everyone. A magical grid that distills the web into simple Lego-like building blocks. With our app, anyone on earth can build a custom website or online store in seconds—without code, all from a phone.

Our business and team have grown a lot in the past year, and we are looking for a creative growth manager who wants to identify, launch and test growth opportunities (across product and marketing) to bring Universe to the next level. This is a role that will have a lot of impact and is perfect for someone who enjoys autonomy.

The Role & Team 👤

Universe has a small and extremely high leverage growth team. We work "across the stack" from marketing to product to grow our business. Growth managers have a simple but open-ended mission: come up with ideas that might work, launch and test these ideas (sometimes in a scrappy MVP way, sometimes with more collaboration from other teams) and analyze what impact they have. We are building a team of people who enjoy ambiguity, are aggressive about growth goals, but are patient about the process to get there.

We are looking for a creative, scrappy individual to join the team. You might have had experience in a product-centric or marketing-centric role, or you might already think of yourself as a "growth person."

Regardless of your prior experience, we are looking for someone who wants to think about growth from all angles (from marketing campaigns through product lifecycle) and enjoys testing ideas that could impact the big picture strategy.

This role will report to the Strategy & Operations Lead (Head of Growth) and you will work with nearly every other team at Universe.

What you’ll do 🔧

Identify, design, create, execute and analyze your experiments to drive growth (user growth, product usage growth, paid conversion increase, etc)

Work closely with the rest of the team (Marketing, Product, Engineering, Support) to launch initiatives, collect data and share feedback with the rest of the company

Interview and interact directly with our users to understand what they love, what they want, and how we could find more people like them

Exercise short-term and long-term judgment: some experiments "work" but are not the right strategy for long-term growth. You'll use your judgment & the data you gather to recommend whether we should double down on an idea or give it up and move on to another

Depending on your experience and interest, you might go deeper into one kind of growth more than another, but the types of experiments you might work on include: strategies to expand our footprint internationally, improvements in onboarding, creative techniques to drive organic growth inside the product, price tests, etc.

Who you 👀

No need to have everything on this list, but we are looking for someone who has at least some of the following attributes:

You are very creative: you can generate and articulate growth ideas without guidance

You have confidence in your judgment about what drives growth in a consumer or web app (and what some of the challenges are)

You can work fast: we prioritize speed when it comes to developing and testing new ideas

You can be patient: sometimes even a speedy idea may take a while to execute on a small team ;-)

You are scrappy and willing to go outside your comfort zone. Whether or not you have a technical or analytical background, you are someone who is willing to get your hands dirty with new tools to prototype ideas and analyze data. You are not afraid to fail

You are an excellent communicator. With spoken or written materials, data-filled charts or persuasive memos, you know how to get an idea across in a way that will motivate people!

Nice to have: prior experience in a marketing, product or growth role at a growing consumer company

Nice to have: experience with consumer mobile app subscription models, freemium apps, creative or ecommerce tools

Must have: enthusiasm about our mission to help everyone create the web!
