Universe opens up the possibilities of the internet to everyone. A magical grid that distills the web into simple Lego-like building blocks. With our app, anyone on earth can build a custom website or online store in seconds — without code, all from a phone.


Our business and team have grown a lot in the past year, and we are looking for an experienced generalist to spearhead business operations at Universe. This is a role for someone who wants to make big impact on the entire organization and enjoys taking a systems-level approach to identifying and solving problems.

The Role 👤


We are looking for an experienced generalist to join our team and help solve business problems and design scalable solutions as we grow. You will sit at the center of the company and get significant exposure to our product, growth, marketing, and leadership teams. We’re looking for someone who is a detailed-oriented professional who takes pride in seeing the "big picture" (not just the details), and is ready to do high-leverage work right away while laying the foundation for future team growth.


This role will report to the Strategy & Operations Lead (Head of Growth) and you will work with nearly every other team at Universe.

What you’ll do 🔧


Responsibilities


Finance & accounting: manage transactional accounting (leveraging outside accounting staff and eventually in-house resources) such as monthly close, tax prep and compliance reporting. etc


Own reporting (for board prep, investor updates, financing diligence, etc). At our early stage, this is not mechanical report creation work, but work that requires strategic thinking about how our business works and how best to illustrate it to the outside world


Work closely with the leadership team on financing and other corporate development projects


Diagnose and find scalable solutions to internal business operations needs (for example: designing and rolling out commerce fraud prevention processes; designing and rolling out better QA processes that cut across engineering, support and marketing; working with our people ops team to design and implement goal-setting and performance tracking strategies, etc)


Partner with the People Operations team at Universe to find solutions that make our remote-first team happy and successful. (There are a surprising number of unsolved problems for creating a remote-only experience that scales well. Even basic decisions like how to budget for WFH equipment vs a traditional office space, or how to manage equipment for a distributed support team are more complicated than they would be in a traditional office setting. This is the kind of problem that excites you :-) )


Who you 👀

No need to have everything on this list, but we are looking for someone who has at least some of the following attributes:


- 5+ years of combined experience in generalist business roles of some kind. This could be consulting or investment banking, business operations roles at startups, strategic accounting or even something like a product manager role where you thought about and helped solve core business challenges


- Comfort using a wide range of analytics / reporting tools to understand business growth (tools or languages like Excel, SQL, Tableau, Segment, Amplitude, etc)


- Excellent data visualization skills and quantitative presentation skills. You are the kind of person who cares about the readability, consistency, and overall utility of the charts and graphs you create

- Great communication skills beyond your charts! You are someone who takes pride in looking at a hundred details, but synthesizing a conclusion or recommendation into just a few sentences that a busy team mate will understand quickly


- Willingness to be scrappy - to do whatever it takes to push forward in an early-stage environment


- Nice to have: prior experience with consumer-facing apps. Must have: lots of enthusiasm for the opportunity we're tackling at Universe!
