Universe opens up the possibilities of the internet to everyone. A magical grid that distills the web into simple Lego-like building blocks. With our app, anyone on earth can build a custom website or online store in seconds — without code, all from a phone.


At the heart of what makes Universe successful is a team of people: engineers, designers, makers, professionals, misfits. The Universe team is fully distributed but 100% aligned. We are individualists bound by a singular mission of enabling everyone on earth to build the internet.



Up until now, People has been led by Joe, our CEO & founder and Paul, our Head of Strategy & Operations. As we grow, we need someone who is entirely focused on attracting amazing talent, codifying our team culture, and developing an employee experience that “surprises and delights”.


This is an opportunity to partner closely with a founder-CEO to co-design and build a new kind of company. One that is intentionally built on, and for, the online world.


We are a 40 person, fully distributed team that will double in the coming year. We are investing in this function early because we believe people and culture are at the heart of what makes us successful. We need someone as energized, curious, and rebellious as us to lead this team into the unknown. We are a tiny spaceship exploring a vast, unknown cosmos. Grab a seat, we’re about to blast off.


What you’ll do 🔧


You will report to Joe, the CEO, and partner with him to co-design and scale a generational company. Specifically, you will lead a People Team owning Talent Acquisition, Compensation, Operations and Business partnership.


You will codify, personify and protect the Universe culture, keeping the team focused and aligned yet authentic to our roots and multitude of identities. You will design an organization that allows Universe to rapidly scale, defining and amplifying a world-class talent brand. You will be a candid, strategic thought partner to the business and our leadership. You will constantly think about what it means to “Surprise and Delight” Universe employees throughout their relationship with the company, not simply while employed here.


You will be a strategic leader, that said, you will also be a first-principles builder. As a player-coach, you will hire your team and get into the weeds when needed. You'll spend the rest of your time bringing the best out of your team, leadership, and the company as a whole.


Most importantly, you'll contribute in ways we can't possibly foresee. You'll bring new ideas, new energy, new ways of looking at problems. You'll take what we've got and push us to new heights.


Who you are 👀

You have a strong background in People Operations or Talent Acquisition. You have a track record of building and leading teams at technology companies. You have ideally seen the scale we are at and where we are going.


You have a killer instinct for great talent at all levels. You are able to help the Company develop a unique and exciting brand, establishing us as a world-class employer.


You are a savvy business person with an entrepreneurial streak. You realize that “People” is not a separate function from the business but an integral part of the business.


You are Curious, a first principles thinker and a “Digital Native”. We are building a company on and for the internet, you are comfortable in remote environments and you embrace technology to accelerate your function and the business.


While we've accomplished a lot, we're only just getting started. There are now 5 billion people online, but only a tiny fraction of them can actually build the internet. With a great team, we can change that.
